North Korea invaded South Korea on June 25, 1950 because North Korea wanted South Korea to conform to communism. During the 3 years of war, Russia and China supported North Korea. The United Nations, which included Canada, supported South Korea. The Canadian government, under Prime Minister Louis St-Laurent sent troops from the Canadian Army Special Forces Unit to Korea in December of the same year. Canada sent a total of 26,000 soldiers to participate in the UN lead conflict.
My grandfathers name was Orlando Tibbo. He was 21 years old in 1953 when he joined the Canadian Army to support South Korea. His battalion was "Canadian Army 3RCHA (Royal Canadian Horse Artillery) Fox Troop Gunner O Tibbo SB30759" (Tibbo 41). After basic training in Petawawa, Ontario, Orlando got to go home for a week before being deployed to Korea on May 9th. After a week at home, he returned to Petawawa where they shipped all the army men by train, to Seattle Washington. It took 21 days to get to Sashbow, Japan from Washington. There were about 1400 Canadians and 3000 Americans aboard the Us Marine Links. At 2 pm the next evening, they landing in Ichon, Korea. The troops were on trucks for the adventure across Imjin River. My grandfather's role in the Korean war was as a peacekeeper, which meant he had to transport and protect the Anglican minister whose name was Capitan Vines, from place to place. Captain Vines visited the sick and wounded and prayed over the bodies of fallen soldiers.
