When Japan fell during the second world war, Korea won its independence. The United States and Russia had different plans for Korea. The United States wanted Korea to be a democratic country, while Russia wanted Korea to be a communist country. On Sunday June 25th, 1950, North Korea's army cross the 38th parallel and began war with South Korea on the Ongin peninsula. A few days after the war began, on june 28th, in attempt to stop North Korea from invading, South Korea blew up the bridge across the Han River.
South Korea was losing the war and a lot of their resources were running out and troops were dying. The United Nations condemned North Korea's invasion of South Korea and sent in reinforcements. This was the first war that the United Nations played a role in. At the beginning of the war, South Korea only had 95,000 men but with UN help, within a year they had up to 357,000 troops.
Over the three-year combat period and the subsequent peacekeeping era (to 1957 for Canada), Canada provided 27,000 military personnel; 23,000 Canadian Army, 3,000 Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) and 1,000 RCAF including other Canadian aviators (Mills 1).
